Taking a Break - 2026-04-06
😮💨
Last week in security started over six years ago on 2020-02-10. I've written 269 editions, only taking breaks for winter holidays, DEF CON, and a couple random weeks off here and there.
In that time LWiS has cataloged:
- 📰 1,401 News Stories
- 🧠 2,757 Techniques & Write-ups
- 🛠️ 2,412 Tools & Exploits
- 🆕 1,086 New to Me and Miscellaneous Items
- 👀 496 X Accounts & 443 Blogs followed
6 years is a long time to be writing a weekly newsletter. We've had some great sponsors the past two years, but the amount of time and effort required to filter all the content to produce a quality newsletter that is both informative and engaging is significant. Every edition of LWiS is curated and written exclusively by me. No AI or automated filtering is used.
I've started a bootstrapped company to work full time on Ludus, and that deserves my full attention. We make the best self-hostable cyber range platform and keep as much free and open source as is economically feasible.
I'm going to take a break from writing LWiS. I'm not sure how long I'll be away, and I hope to return soon. I won't stop collecting tools and techniques. The repository of organized tooling I have at this point is a valuable resource that I will continue to maintain and update (and soon make available?).
The sources of content I use to write LWiS are public. You can follow the same X accounts, and get a list of every blog I follow to create LWiS. I recommend the Risky Business podcast to stay up to date on the news and some technical topics in cybersecurity and tl;dr sec is a good newsletter with a broad technical focus. Unfortunately, there isn't a 1 for 1 replacement for LWiS; if there was I wouldn't have started it or kept it going all these years.
I'm grateful to all the researchers who have shared their work and made LWiS possible, and everyone who has read, shared, and showed support for LWiS. Without the community, LWiS would not have been possible.
You can sign up for email updates to get notified when LWiS is back.
Stay curious,
- Erik
